Acrhiving Pictures

I have began scanning all of my old photos and I am currently scanning them at 600dpi. Before I get really far into this project what would be some general settings to put my scanner at to keep these images at the best quality and also in case I want to reprint them? Is 600dpi good enough?

Most photos today are printed @ 300 DPI so 600DPI is good.

aka 600 is superflous and maybe time consuming. unless they are film prints or something of the kind, i think it's safe to drop them to a 450 in the interest of time. plus, it depends on the scanner, as well.
