A problem with FireFox

You can try checking if the FF DNS cache is enabled. The browser may be requesting a server's IP everytime you try to load a page. If the browser doesn't save these addresses things can get a lot slower. Another way to check this is by inserting the direct IP address of any site in the url bar to see if the page loads faster.

Edit: FF caches addresses for a minute so what I said is probably wrong.

I had the same issue with both Chrome and FF on my gfs old laptop running XP SP3. Adding RAM to it and putting 7 on it cleared the issue completely (as not even fresh formats helped).
