Potentially the longest thread in history...

Just wanted to stop by and say it's nice to see this thread is still going after all these years!

My Digital Life is a Mess! Help!

Ya, it's from scratch so it'll be a Z170, probably an ASUS of sorts. Thought about going X99 but eh. Not sure I do enough other tasks besides gaming that would make the jump worth it. I'd take the drives out of the enclosures, but I thought Western Digital uses some one-off type connector...

My Digital Life is a Mess! Help!

Greetings all- So I'm looking for some input on what direction I should take on my desktop and server. What I've got now is sort of a hodge podge of storage. My needs have changed again so I'm re-thinking what I should do next. Laptop just kicked the proverbial bucket, so now I'm ordering...

    IBM 7nm process...

Having a working prototype is worlds apart from a semiconductor manufacturer qualifying a new process for production. Samsung and Global Foundries are going to eventually benefit from IBM hitting that mark, but that's going to be for the super computer market and eventually the mobile market.

Difference between Asus G501 and GL551

The GL551, (depending on the variant) is a pretty solid deal now if you can find one. They should be going for around $1K by now. The 960M is effectively a re-branded 860M, lots of sources for that if you look around a bit. Owning a 860M and gaming at 1080P, I can definitely suggest avoiding a...

    Consumer NAS

Just throwing in another perspective of someone that's gone both routes, that's all man.

    Consumer NAS

My two cents- Go with your own and use FreeNAS. I've had a FreeNAS build before and miss it dearly. Currently I'm using a ReadyNAS Duo+ w/ 2xWD Red TBs in a Raid 1 and an external WD 2TB. Stores all of my media and the external stores my Steam library back up. Stores all files fine, transfer...

Returning to the hardware game and upgrading.

Had a few minutes before work this AM and it booted up with the second card and ran some benches just fine. That's w/ panels off and the SSD and Black on my desk. Thinking its a ground that's creating an open from a panel, HDD tray, heatsink mount, or the screws to hold in the second video card...

Returning to the hardware game and upgrading.

Haha I know, but after X cups that night I wasn't really thinking about it. Ya I know, I'll go throw everything. The entire inside of the case wasn't hit hard, it was mostly the monitor, walls, new carpet, KB/M, and a drizzle on the UPS. I'm hoping its just the mobo as I seriously dig those...

Returning to the hardware game and upgrading.

(See my sig for my current set up) What a pain this is turned into. Long story short, had myself my mixed drink sitting on my desk with my panels off of my case so I could admire the hardware. GF and I were kicking around her yoga ball and sure enough it knocked over my drink EVERYWHERE...

Most definitely will, maybe even a Xeon, just depends on if their employee discounts are like they were in ten years ago.

So it ended up taking me a bit longer to get around to getting some new parts haha! My last mobo decided it didn't want to have the PCI-E slot work anymore, so that sort of jump started the upgrade train. Ended up getting a Kingston 240GB SSD/Cooler Master V8/ Gigabyte 7870/ ASUS M5A99X and I...

Thanks for the quick response! I've ran through those a few times my head. Here's what I'm thinking- -H80 w/Corsair Neutron 240GB, for OCIng and space for OS w/ my most used. -$200 GPU w/ an SSD for $100 -$200 GPU w/ H80 -$300 i5/mobo I'm picking whatever I choose tomorrow AM. Thanks for the...

Returning to the hardware game and upgrading.

Hey all- Long time no post! Sold a beauty of a laptop to get back into the desktop world in November. Had a tight budget of $1,000 to include monitor+speakers. Here's what came out of it for the tower, (EDIT: I buy from one or two locally owned family stores, not online)- - AMD FX-6300 - ASUS...
