network disconnected itself automatically

The network connection for my PC recently gets disconnected after some time I have connected to the internet, and so I have to reconnect to the interent every some time. I don't know how to work it out.
Could somebody help me please?

I am using XP SP2., and I am not using ny router with 6MB bandwidth provided.

ok, so you are wired into the broadband modem??

Can you describe EXACTLY how you go about re-connecting to the internet when this happens?? Do you power cycle either the PC or the modem?

Yes, it's broadband modem.
Here is the way how I connect to the Internet:
MY ISP provided a CD which contains a software for network connection for XP user. I installed the software and each time before I can connect to the internet, I have to enter the ISP name and the password.

Now I can't see any network connection icons when I open network connection in the Control Panel , still I can browse any web site as usual. It 's weird! Is it a sign that there are some system files which have corrupted? How do I repair them?
Do I have to reinstall the OS or else?
Please kindly help!
