hi the problem I have is every other time i restart my computer, it freezes after about 30 seconds

it seems as though each time i run scandisk or chkdsk /r and reboot, it works fine

then when i shut it down or restart it, it'll freeze again after 30 seconds and i'd have to go to safemode to schedule scandisk or put in the winxp cd to do chkdsk /r in the recovery console and keep repeating this each time i want to start the computer up.

does anyone know what could be causing this? sometimes when it freezes it would reboot after a couple minutes of being frozen.

also the computer specs i have is

Windows XP Pro
Athlon XP 3200+
512 PC3200 ram
Radeon 9600 Video card
Maxtor 40gb 7200rpm 2mb cache harddrive

if i'm missing any vital information please let me know

try a utility to check the health of the hdd - I guess you need to remove the partitions of the hdd, create the partitions again, format the hdd through DOS - run a through scan and then install the OS.
