Default Windows Acting wierd?

Recently everything in my computer has been fine with Windows Xp home. no problems. but a little while ago I had updated windows and restarted and restarted again. so everything was going well until i was downloading a file and my power to my house shut down. After the power came back on i fired up the system (it gave the select option; start windows normally safe mode etc etc..) and it takes FOREVER to startup we're talking an hour here (after watching every show available on the tv) i came back and it was waiting on login screen, So i logged in. Well it now says "Your computer has changed drastically and Windows needs to be activated." So I click no just wanting to get in but it goes to a black screen, now when I click yes (after giving up and restarting) it goes to a blue screen (default desktop color) but doesn't respond. What do I do? I thank you for reading my long arse explanation and I thank you for your assistance.
