Why can't I install windows?

Hye!

I:

am having bit of a problem.

My friend has given me a 13 gb IBM hard drive, IDE, and when i try to install windows XP onto it it never gets past the * inspecting hardware configuration* part. the screen goes black.

I tried to install my old windows 98 onto the hard drive and I got a * unrecoverable error; setup cannot continue* or something like that.

My friend said he pulled it from a working computer.

The thing is, I am able to install Xubuntu distro on the hdd. Linux is able to install just fine, why not windows?

Could be bad sectors or might not be the HDD at all...

I will second spark... Could be the HDD with bad sectors, try running chkdsk /r on that drive...
