Turning your computer off each night and when not in use...

Turn mine off every night unless i'm doing some type of overnight processing like a scan or something else.

I don't do it for the extension of life it may give my PC, i do it to conserve power and keep my office cooler than it otherwise would be with the PC on.

I have a few servers downstairs that i turn off when not in use as well - same concept, it's to cool it off.

I think that the general rule of thumb is; if you're not going to use the computer for several hours, turn it off. Otherwise, if you're just stepping away for a while, just put it in sleep mode.
