staying connected using modem problem.

I have a Dell computer. Running window 2000 professional. After I connect to my service provider using a phone modem, if I switch applications the connection immediatly disconnects. This means I have to reconnect before I can use the new application. Any suggestions as to what is wrong. If I go from internet explorer to outlook express it disconnects and if I do the opposite it also disconnects.

Make sure IE is set up to not disconnect when closed down. I'm assuming your not minimizing but closing it. It's probably set to disconnect, just set to always stay connected. ALSO in Outlook, goto (tools I think) in the settings and something like connection. Just play around until you find this, its hidden somewhere and have not had to explain this in awhile (oh, the wonders of getting of phone support and working in an office! Doing networking and some programming, yeehaw!) but you should see disconnect after sending and receiving. Make sure that is UNCHECKED.
