Ok, so i'm in a bit of a questionable argument with a fellow worker about ...

What is the maxiumum amount of RAM that Windows XP (not the 64-bit version) can handle?

Is it:
A) 2 GB
B) 4 GB

We have a PC that has 3GB of RAM installed - it boots and works fine. Windows reports 3GB of RAM as well. However, i'm being told that the last 1 GB block will not be used... so the extra GB of RAM is pointless.

Also, what are the max amounts of ram for the 64-bit version of WinXP? Does it have anything to do with the CPU as well?

Thanks in advance.

XP Professional supports 4GB of RAM
XP X-64bit supports 128GB

The CPU has to be 64bit to support 128GB. 32bit Supports 4GB.

All 32bit CPU can address up to 4GB of memory.

1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 = 4,294,967,296 (4GB)

Windows XP Home and Pro can reach 4GB.
