Slap on one of the puppies and I can beat you with RTFM.

Back to the topic.
If you plan on getting this super bad-ass Backup Server you will want Datacenter drives. WD se (Blue).

Raid-5 is overkill. Get two 2TB drives and mirror them.

Also if you plan on going crazy with backups, software and RAID, it will require you to purchase Windows Server.

Just get an external hard drive

Why blow money on Win Server when this is just going to be a basic NAS? :-\ He would be better off with just an external drive in some ways, but a basic NAS can be done cheaply, and nicely if he picks his OS and parts right, hence the reason for something like FreeNAS, thats a few hundred off the cost right there.

I have this for home back up, it can handle 4 tb (two-2tb drives)in an auto raid conf. and it's really cheap. So far I have been using this for almost one year connected to the usb port on my router. Backs up two partitions on my pc and two partitions on my wife's pc weekly. It's been flawless
