Default COM and USB

I got a Serial-to-USB adapter, and with the hardware i'm gonna hook up to requires a serial port at it's in. When i go to hook the USB to my computer and the serial to the Hardware will be able to read from the COM ports. Because of the software that i'm gonna be using all it uses is the COM ports

I"m so sorry it's very difficult to explain

what is the piece of software necessarily that uses COM Ports to address the hardware? Would the manufacturer have a patch to allow it to instead address USB ports?

If it's a program written for DOS or runs via a command prompt, chances are it won't be able to Address USB ports. In this case, you may need to buy / find newer software that will allow you to accomodate your needs.

Hope that these lead you to some level of satisfaction.
