Cleaning the registry of old and abandoned entries, as well as defragmenting (having it in proper sequence) it, improves Windows performance and reduces the chances for crashes.

Think of the registry as the nervous system of Windows, telling it where everything is and what to do with it. By cleaning it out and streamlining it, you allow it to do its job with less overhead and fewer obstacles.
