New (well not really) laptop

Well, I just got my laptop, it's a Dell Inspirion 1000 (yes it fails hard). It came with 256mb of RAM but i have another 256 but when i put it in it won't turn on. It Runs fine with 256. It used to run with 512, but then one of the sticks of ram failed so i got this pair.

Also, What's the cheapest way i can get a ext dvd rom drive? I have one i can use, can i just buy an enclosement for it?

Also, The hard drive sucks, so, can I buy a new one or is it only compatible with this one? I'm almost positive it's an IDE drive.
