G501 got 4k display, 4gb graphics card, GL551 JW got 1080 display, 2gb graphics card. Both got same screen size and processor. If you want gl551 make sure its JW not JM since JM got weaker graphics card. Plus G501 is thinner and got few more features.

Main difference is that the G501 has a 960m which is slightly better than the 860m in the GL551.

You won't be able to really push any games in 4k the G501, so it's probably just there for marketing/boasting reasons.

Yes Gl551JW is better, no point of G501 due to 4k display.

The GL551, (depending on the variant) is a pretty solid deal now if you can find one. They should be going for around $1K by now. The 960M is effectively a re-branded 860M, lots of sources for that if you look around a bit. Owning a 860M and gaming at 1080P, I can definitely suggest avoiding a SKU that touts a 4K display.
