Default how do i install a hard drive?

i just bought a OEM 80gb maxtor diamond plus 9 harddrive. and putted on cable select. plugged it into my computer. loads the bios and then freezes. i can still go into the bios but im stuck there and dont know what to do. do i go to the maxtor website and download the installation program onto a cd or a floppy? please help.

Set the Jumpers to master or slave depends on what it says.

you may have to partition it with fdisk. If that doesnt work, scandisk it. One of mine had a bunch of bad sectors, have to send it back.
