Default CPU running hot

hey i have a pentium 4 3hgz with stock heatsink and fan, and its running at around 70 degress pluss, way to hot , how thick thin should i apply heatsink compond, could it be hot cause i need to put more on ?

Is it 70C or 70F? I am hoping you mean 70F...

You need a new HSF, Intel's stock suck.

yeah C 70C oh man way to high
i have heat sink compond here i will re apply it could you help on giving a quick run down on the best way ?

Get a new heatsink, don't re-use the stock one. The Thermalright XP-90 with some Arctic Silver 5 will drop your temperatures considerably.

oh lucky me, i put a fresh blob of heatsink stuff on. and now its in the 30 - 40 c yeah, but i need a new heatsink thanks for the help

My friend has XP-90 on his Intel and it dropped temps by about 8 C

wow it dropped that much??? mines running at 50 degrees C, at idle, ambient temp 42 degrees c. Maybe i should get some artic silver?

i say get the zalman 7700 heatsink and fan and u can control the speeds its nice
