USB memory stick not recognised

I have a USB memory stick which just seems to have died. I plug it into the USB port and nothing happens. Its light does not come on and it is not listed as a device (under windows XP)

I have tried it on various PCs, all the same problem

Any ideas.

If it is dead, any idea how I can get the data back...

i have mended a couple of usb sticks where the connection from the usb to the pcb inside had become seperated. In both cases this was due to the stick being damaged by being hit whilst still in the computer. You need a mate with a soldering iron and good eyesight! Of course, it may be completely dead, it's hard to tell...
