i've turned on my old e6600 w/o a heatsink and got to bios to check temp.. i was at 80c ... pretty **** hot

It is safe as long as you dont keep it longer than like 30 seconds. Just enough time to hear the post.

I saw a CPU explode once when someone took the heatsink off. It make a hole in the case.
there was a series of videos like this by a website (whose name eludes me). they were fake but funny. first was an exploding duron, then a P4. they also made a barbeque, literally out of a 486 PC and faked a RAID array catching fire.
