Will a Slim DVD drive function as a normal DVD drive?

I had accidently bought a slim dvd drive for my computer, and I was wondering If I could still use it by having it wired up but sitting outside the computer until another one I ordered arrives. Can the slim dvd drive still function, but not attach?

Well......technically as long as it's connected properly it could function normally outside the case.....but I certainly wouldn't recommend doing that for obvious reasons.
