Hey everyone. I currently have a PC running Vista Ultimate (64-bit on one drive, 32-bit on another). I'm heavily considering purchasing Windows 7, once it's released (in about a week). But, I've also been considering getting a new processor for several months. I don't have enough cash at the moment to do both at the same time. So, I'm wondering which would be the better decision to go with first? Or rather, which one would I notice the better performance increase from, independently?
Current PC specs:
- mobo: Asus M4N72-E AM2+ (w/ AM3-support)
- CPU: AMD Ahtlon x2 7750 Black Editon
- RAM: 8GB (2GB x 4) Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800
- GPU: XFX Radeon 4870 1GB/256bit
- PSU: Corsair TX750W
- Western Digital and Seagate SATA hard drives
My debate is between a PhenomII x4 955 and Windows 7 Professional (64-bit). As far as computer usage, I play a lot of games (i.e. Crysis, GTA IV, Fallout 3, Unreal Tournament, Half-Life, etc.), use video editing as well as audio editing programs, and the typical music, streaming movies, etc. Many of the programs already have support for 64-bit and/or multi-CPUs (GTA IV, Adobe Premier, Cubase (64-bit patch) for example).
I have used the Win7 beta and RC (both 32 and 64 bit versions of each) and definitely noticed smoother performance from nearly all the apps I run. I'm definitely excited about 7's release. But, at the same time, I'm willing to hang on to Vista for a while longer (or 7 RC, for that matter) if I'd get higher gains from going with a dual core to quad core jump, instead of a Vista to 7 jump.
I think the biggest reason for my dilemma is that I have 7 Pro on pre-order, from when Microsoft did the 50% off pre-order promo. So, $100 for 7, or $195 for the cpu...?
Sorry for the excessive rambling. But, any thoughts/suggestions are much appreciated.
