Default Thinking about building a new gaming PC...

I was once a hardcore gamer but now I know NOTHING about current PC hardware. My PC is five years old and I am considering an upgrade. It was bleeding edge in 2005 and it lasted me until Crysis when I gave up on PC gaming for a while (after upgrading to an 8800gt and still only able to chug along at medium settings at 1024x768 resolution). If I was to build a new PC today, or within the next few months, what would be my best bet as far as hardware? More specifically, what CPU, graphics card, motherboard, and RAM would give me the best bang for my buck these days? In addition, I am considering a new monitor as well. What is a good gaming monitor? Back in 2005, games looked simply awful if played outside a monitor's native resolution. Is this still the case today? If so, I want a monitor with a native resolution appropriate for whatever hardware I choose.

I am looking at spending no more than $1000 for the entire rig. A friend told me that over the past few years gaming hardware has become much more affordable. Thanks for any assistance!

**** Dubya it's been a while.

Like yourself I'm also a little behind the curve on all this new hardware. If you need it, I've got a 900W psu I'll sell ya...

Default Re: Thinking about building a new gaming PC...

bang for buck is going to come from amd.

cpu
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ955FBGMBOX
not quite as fast as an i5 750, not as expensive though.

gfx card/free game
Newegg.com - ZOTAC ZT-40402-10P GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
+
Newegg.com - Nvidia Free Just Cause 2 Coupon Free with purchase!

best overall choice in the $200 price range. lifetime warranty from zotac, and free game is a nice bonus.

ram
Newegg.com - G.SKILL ECO Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO
good set of ram; rated at 1600mhz w/ tight cas7 timings at 1.35v.

motherboard/optical drive
Newegg.com - ASUS M4A87TD EVO AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
+
Newegg.com - ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner - Bulk - OEM

board has amd's latest 8xx series chipset, with sata 3 and usb 3 support as you can see. regular dvd burner i guess.

case/hdd
Newegg.com - Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ,comes with Three Fans-1x Front Blue LED 120mm Fan, 1x Top 140mm Fan, 1x Rear 120mm Fan, option Fans-2x Side 120mm Fan
+
Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

great price for a fast caviar black drive, i hadn't realized it dropped. comes w/ a 5yr warranty too. the case is also great for price, comes with 3 fans and nice wire management holes.

subtotal for these would be about $660. if you wanna buy aspire's psu (which seems like a good buy for the price, btw) at his current selling price would add $110, so that would leave you over $200 in your budget for a monitor, and/or keyboard/mouse, speakers, etc.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I prefer Intel CPUs and Nvidia graphics cards. How does the GTX 460 compare to the GTX 480...or for my frame of reference the 8800gt? How does it handle Crysis (I know Crysis is an old game but the technology really wasn't ready for it in 2007 when it was released)? Will it be enough to handle upcoming id Tech 5 games? Does anybody have any suggestions for a monitor?

The GTX 460 equals about a 1/2 of a GTX 480 and the GTX 460 equals about 3-8800GT's. And I'm just guessing on the 460 to 8800GT comparison.
