just woundering if the new sata II hard drives will be faster that the currnet WD Raptor drive and if these new drives make the Raptor redundant.

from what i have read, the raptor will still be king.

sata 2 allows a maximum bandwidth of 300MB per second (or is it Gb/s i'm not sure) but the discs are just not spinning fast enough for that yet, or are not dense enough to allow full utilisation of the bandwidth. Its more the rotational speed of the raptor that makes it king, 10K vs 7.2K will win everytime.

I think it is just a marketing gimmick at the moment. The main benefits of sata2 are ncq, and that has already been implemented in seagates later sata drives.

And when sata drives came out, even though they had a 150MB/s bandwidth, the were only just a little bit faster than the pata ones.
