I always use the search feature to open my programs; but the reason I like the start menu to do it, is because I don't like my whole UI switching to the Start screen. Sometimes I like to multitask .

I also use stratus back and love it, I just find it more convenient hitting the start button and finding all the stuff right there and easy to navigate without changing the whole window, I like to multi task also.
