That maybe from the new drive tools seen in Vista over what was seen with XP. The partitioning has seen improvements where you don't see the 18mb of unallocated drive space while XP is known for not full using all space available since it lacks the level of hardware detection seen with a tool like GParted. V
Vista also sees generic drivers for things like sata drives while often you needed a driver floppy on many boards to see XP installed. I would suggest an alternate partitioning tool be used first to see the array partitioned where the Vista installer will then recognise and format it. The installer may readily detect the Raid controller.
