hey, my university just started a gaming club this year and we decided that we would love to have a server for CS and possibly other games as well on campus.

Anyways, we're going to have to go ask the student govt for funding soon, but we don't know how much a server will cost.

We're looking to buy the parts and build it all ourselves and have it on campus. We don't know what to look for.

Ideally we'd like something as cheap as possible so long as it doesn't lag. Depending on how much it'd cost as well we'd like to have Counter-Strike: Source, vent and possibly more games (if we get a dedicated box).

any ideas how much that'd run us?

thanks guys

vent free server files only allow for an 8 person limit... keep that in mind

anyways

look for a cheaper dual core proccesor, such as the opteron 165 on a cheap socket 939 board, overclock the proccesor to somewhere equivalent to 2.5 or up

get atleast 1 gig of ram, 2 gigs preferably

depending on your preference (map change speeds, writing files, reading files, bootup etc.) get a nice 7200 or 10k RPM HDD, the speeds truly make a difference when your running a server

Just get a cheapo case, nothing fancy needed, maybe a smaller one that can fit all your components to stash away or get a server box since the university might have a place to stack those up

for graphics, integrated is fine since you won't be doing anything intense on the actual computer (clients would)

you might want to consider a nice NIC card if you want however its not really neccesary and the performance difference is negligable

if your university is the only ones will be accesing the server, I'd reccomend just running it as a lan server, less bandwith and better performance

for actual server setup, visit Google :p, or cstrikeplanet.com they have great guides and an actual server cfg maker which can optimize for lan, online, high performance etc.
