Its faster clocked, but GDDR4 speeds can be achieved with decent over clocks on GDDR3 cards.

GDDR5 is another story how ever. Since the 3870's GDDR4 were clocked at about 2200mhz and my current GDDR3 card is at 1800mhz. With a 400mhz memory overclock I could match the speeds of the GDDR4 ram.

But GDDR5 is clocked at 3600mhz. So it would be basically impossible to reach GDDR5 speeds with GDDR3. Unless you are willing to overclock your memory by like 1000~1200mhz.
