I agree with the previous poster, adding an SSD will cause most everything to be faster when dealing with reading and writing to the hard drive. 8 GB of RAM is more than sufficient unless you are doing heavy video editing. If the laptop supports it, try to use your old mechanical hard drive as a storage drive and the new SSD as a primary boot drive that also holds a few applications that would boot faster. The biggest problem with buying an SSD is that flash memory is so much more expensive than disk memory, as is found in older mechanical hard drives.
