Throw in an SSD; should make things a bit snappier.

Laptop: MSI GT70 2OC-059us | i7-4700MQ | 16GB | GTX 770m | 500GB SSD / 750GB HDD | 17.3" | Win10 Pro
Desktop: 4690k | 12GB g.Skill RipJaws | GTX 970 | 520hx | Z87X-UD4H | Corsair Vengeance C70 | Corsair H110 | Acer 25" | Acer 22" | Win10
Mobile: Samsung Galaxy Note 5

If I help you, or you just like what I said, rep me by clicking the under my post

I agree with the previous poster, adding an SSD will cause most everything to be faster when dealing with reading and writing to the hard drive. 8 GB of RAM is more than sufficient unless you are doing heavy video editing. If the laptop supports it, try to use your old mechanical hard drive as a storage drive and the new SSD as a primary boot drive that also holds a few applications that would boot faster. The biggest problem with buying an SSD is that flash memory is so much more expensive than disk memory, as is found in older mechanical hard drives.
