by ribbon I guess you meant IDE cable

as long as the sata drive cable is attached, your motherboard can boot from it after you installed the operating system. (I know, I've plugged my drives on 5 and 6 before, Asus motherboard.)

all you need is SATA data cable, and SATA power cable, you can safely ignore the other connection.
