Question CPU vs. GPU

Hello, long time reader of these forums but my first time posting, and I have a CPU/GPU question here. Basically I'm building a new gaming machine primarily for Starcraft 2, Civilization V, and a few other releases but I have an overall question, is it better to have a stronger CPU or GPU for this? I've honestly read support for both sides, so I wanted to ask myself and get your take on this.

Basically with this part of my budget I was thinking of getting an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T and Radeon HD 5870, or would it be better to spend more money and get an Intel Core i7 and downgrade to a Radeon HD 5770? I'd rather not get anything from Nvidia as well because to be honest over the years I've had nothing but trouble getting those to perform well.

a 1055t with a 5870 would get you far better performance than an i7 with a 5770.
