^HDDs actually do see some benefit. Usual USB2.0 transfer speeds between an external mechanical drive and an internal one would be ~20-25. When I use USB3.0, it's more like 70.
I've never seen any drive get anywhere near 70MB/s transfer speeds. SATA to SATA (2 or 3) gets 40MB/s optimal. USB 2 and 3 both get about 30-35MB/s. All real-world.
Just to check confirm my thoughts, I transferred a 1.2GB 720p video file just now between two different SATA2 drives (via SATA, internally). Hovered between 67MB/s and 70MB/s. Same result with TeraCopy and the default Win7 file copier.
I'm pretty sure I was hitting 77ish, it was about a month ago but yeah. I'll do another test for ya when I get home, on a 2.5" USB3 and a 3.5" USB3 SATAII drives to an internal SATAII drive.
