What You've Just Bought!

Re: The What You've just Bought thread!

It isn't really gas mileage being an issue IMO, heck, cars from well over 10 years ago got 20mpg city, why are current non-hybrid cheap crap cars still only sitting at that if not worse? I miss my intrepid. :(

Aside from that, don't ***** and complain about not having money for your stupid iphone5 when you are spending your money as is, save, or dont, do not complain about something so useless.

Re: The What You've just Bought thread!

I totally agree, Kman. You're the one who drives an inefficient vehicle. Don't complain when it costs a lot in gas. Even if you can't afford a new shiny hybrid, you can get an old Metro or Saturn that sips gas.
It's not so much inefficient because you can still have fuel efficient cars that haven't been taken care of that suck fuel like a huge V8. The sheer miles alone simply eats away at gas because whenever I have to drive it's pretty far. In the short period of time I have had my car I have put over 6000 miles on it. That is more than 1000 a month and part of that it was parked due to needing a clutch.

I'm probably never going to drive anything besides a Mustang or a **** mobile (M3 e36), so having a V6 5 speed is about as fuel efficient as I can get. Still though, the missus has a 2.2 4 banger in her Cavalier and even though it gets really good mileage (compared to most American cars) we still go through about $30 a week in gas in her car. That is with an engine that has been serviced by me the past 120k miles (3 years). $30 might not sound like much, but considering we moved into the city to be closer it is a lot. She works about 10 minutes from here, if that says anything. When we first got the car I drove 30 minutes one way to work in it everyday and spent 20 bucks a week in gas. So if you put two and two together that is why we personally complain.

I'll also say, hybrids don't really help much in mpg. Plus with the way companies are over here in the US of $ it costs MORE to get a more fuel efficient vehicle. We don't have a car note on either vehicle because of the way I am so I try not to complain too much about gas prices, but it's still getting ridiculous considering 2 months ago it was down to 2.98. It is now about $4 a gallon again. That being said, once I drop a V8 in my car I can't complain at all rofl.

Re: The What You've just Bought thread!

What would help gas mileage is increasing the speed limit on highways/roads that are safe enough to travel at 65-75MPH, I know everyone and his momma says that driving faster results in more resistance, thus lower mileage. Kinda hard to believe when my ol' 97 intrepid hit 35MPG driving at those speeds, yet at 55mph I barely pushed 25MPG.

Re: The What You've just Bought thread!

Your MPG is different at different speeds. For most cars over here they're most efficient at the 60-65MPH mark. In the UK we have 70mph limit on the motorway, and 60mph (or is it 50?) everywhere else unless otherwise signposted.

Re: The What You've just Bought thread!

I just purchased a 560Ti for only $139 and it is working well. It in unbranded, and many people were suspicious of it, but I think I received a good deal.

Regarding cars, mileage, effeciency, etc. my wife and I are looking at the Prius Plug In.

This vehicle is very attractive to us for a number of reasons:

1. Efficiency: if you drive 62.5 miles per hour or lower, it runs totally gas free [electricity only] for the first hour. So, zero gas expenditure.

2. Should pay itself off for us within 4-5 years at current gas prices [if gas prices increase, then we it would pay itself off even sooner].

3. Toyota Prius has a good reputation and track record [it is not like it just came out and everyone is waiting to see if it really works as advertised].

4. Has ample storage room and the size would work for us because we do not have a large family.

5. I hate paying for gas three times a week!

Ok, please give me some good advice, comments, etc.

I would like to know if I am seeing clearly and this truly is a good deal.

Thank you,

Soar

Re: The What You've just Bought thread!

I get 34-36 MPG in my 20 year old Escort so I won't complain even it is does look like crap.

Re: The What You've just Bought thread!

IMO, stay away from hybrid/electric. You are going to be paying out the rear end in ~10 years, far more than the fuel you have saved.

But it is true, most cars get crap mileage at 55mph, even our little GMC truck with a 2.2l I4 gets better mileage at around 70MPH instead of 55, though, taking off makes it go to absolute crap because it takes AGES to get to speed, but it maintains speed just fine.

Eh these were the cars with that pedal problem.

I just bought a bean bag, a TV, bunch of soda, and the missus bought a dog :|

Re: The What You've just Bought thread!

There are plenty of fuel efficient cars in the US.

Unless you live really far out the way of a city it is going to be no different to here. You'll have your gas stations, supermarkets and retail stores just like every other town and city in the world.

Fair enough if your job is a while away. But there are plenty of people doing 1 to 3 hour commutes to work everyday over here. My dad himself spends close to $800 a month of fuel just for commuting to work, his journey is only 1.5 hours.

Living on that kind of income.. saving should be a priority, especially while you live with your parents, when you have the least amount of responsibilities. What happens when your car breaks down and you have a 500 dollar payment to fix it? Or if gas prices suddenly doubled? etc etc.

It's like.... arguing with a brick wall.

I don't pay for gas :p

I've spent over 1000 in the past year on my car without even having a job so I'll manage pretty easily.

I think Americans must be better with money than us or something. Out of the 10 or 15 so friends, and my cousins etc my age I speak to regularly, I don't know ANY that are saving for the future.
