I have been wanting to do some basic photography. I am tired of the limitations of my point and shooter, so I have been looking at the Nikon D40.

They discontinued the D50 right? The D40 was the replacement. Does this sound like a good camera to start with?

Lance.

Its not bad, but its kinda small. The new D60 is pretty much the D40. I think it would be a good entry level dslr.

Ya, but the D60 is almost $700 with a decent lens. I found the D40X, it has similar specs as the 60 in terms of MP and stuff. The price tag isn't as high either.

The D40 is pretty solid for a more entry-level slr. Good quality, you don't miss out on too many features, and I think Nikon lenses were pretty affordable. It's got my stamp of approval for what it's worth.

Get the Nikon D40X. Very good camera, not much difference between that and there higher end cameras, just the usual. Doesn't cope with non-perfect conditions aswell as higher end cameras do (but this is true of all entry level dslr's)

I found some shots taken with the camera in "out of the box" trim.
