hey guys.

yup thats right i've got another problem. I recently downloaded the service pack 2 critical update from the microsoft website. the windows security centre window was telling me that there was a problem with my norton antivrus 2003.

basically my auto protect is not on and when i try to enable it i get this message;
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...=english&module=4002&error=516&build=STANDARD

i,ve tried everything that the symentec website has told me to.
i do not have any viruses on my comp. I have Even uninstalled norton fully and reinstalled it but i still cant seem to get the auto protect to work.

please help!!

Auto protect is good if you plan on opening viruses, but it's not really needed, a simple scan of the file will work. Yet another reason for me to not install sp2 thanks!

thanks4 the reply

yes i did install SP2, thats when my auto protect stoped working.
Should i uninstall it, as i use Mozilla firefox as my defult browser and only use IE while checking my e-mails using msn.

i wouldnt try to uninstall it, to much of a hassle, but u can try if u wish. Windows will rpobable throw about 100 error msgs while u uninstall it :D

Good luck. And also, u can try looking into a better AV thats free, like Avast, or AVG. They both work with sp2, as i have tested it.

You mean uninstall sp2? I dont know if you can do that but if its possible then go for it. Or you could turn off auto-protect. Or you could try re-installing your antivirus, but i doubt that will get rid of the problem.

just if your wondering, I have SP1 and Norton 2002, my pc's been running smooth since 2002. Had a few spyware in the past, but nothing regedit and taskmanager couldnt handle.

I don't recommend trying to uninstall SP2. However, you can go to the SP2 Windows Security Alerts panel and disable the new SP2 alerts that it started when you installed it.

There will be 3 main selections for the firewall, cookies, and AV. You may have to disable one of the XP features.

Dave :D

hey guys,

i have disabled the security alerts but still the auto protect doesn't work.

i decided to run housecall it found something like 734 infections i cleaned most of them but a few i could not access. anywys i googled the name of the virus PARITE.A and followed the insturustions on the syamtec website. including turning off system restore and deleting the registary value PINFI

When I run the scan in safe mode norton found more then 2000 infections it fixed most of them but there where 127 that it couldn't clean, quarantine or delete.

i think this stupid virus is still messing up my computer i am unable to access yahoo.co.uk i think the two are related

help me please i need to get rrid of this damn virus. it all started with that stupid service pack 2

help meee
