Confusing Network!!!!!!!!

I just set up a network through a cable modem to a router to both of my computers but i tried to set up a network where i can share files and folder and drives but its not working, any ideas???????????

What OSs are you running on the computers?

Make sure you have forwarded ports to the appropriate programs for each machine, also, I like to force the TCP/IP to use a fixed internal ip by going into the networks connections properties. Just open a command prompt, type ipconfig /all , and copy the info you see there into your TCP/IP properties.Do the same for each machine.

have you shared any drives/folders? You would need to right click on drive/folder and slick the sharing option.
