Wireless Card Chipsets

What are the specific wireless card chipsets? What is the difference between them? Are the wireless cards referred to for laptops only I'm assuming and not wireless usb adapters for common pcs?
I just want to become more familiar with the networking.

Not really going to go into detail about specific chipsets, but each card usually has a specific make of chipset, similar to that of a motherboard northbridge. I really don't dive down to look at chipsets and such on wireless (to be honest, I am not a fan of wireless, unless there is no other choice)... Only chipset maker I can think of right now are Broadcom, and I THINK Texas Instruments has some too....

As far as wireless cards.... suppose thats a personal terminology preference.... I just lump them all together, USB dongle, PCI card, PCMCIA card, same thing, just different interface for the computer.
