Make sure netbios is enabled, the guest account is activated and that you are on the same subnet. If you have a firewall then make sure that you have set it up to allow communication between the two pc's. If you are running a DHCP server on the router then the tcp/ip settings on the pc's should be set on auto detect.
 
Ok i successfully did as you said....and it pinged PERFECTLY....but i now cant get internet access. So i deleted all that i had done with the IP addresses etc.......and the interent worked....but the pingin didnt?!

Would i have to do anything with the Netgear Wireless Router??

I have a PPOEE/A?? i think thats how its is spelt.

I am very computer wise but this is my first networking experiment!

Right click your connection, click properties, go to TCP/IP, set subnet mask on both to 255.255.255.0 and IP's should resemble 192.168.1.x
or
192.168.0.x
