Wi-Fi Problem

Do you have more than one wireless network in your neighborhood?
I had a 1700 series Dell laptop that had a very similar problem, would not connect and I noticed that it only picked up two networks in my area that actually has about 10. After several diagnostic procedures I replaced the wireless card and it connected to my network right away and picked up all the other wireless networks too

Doesn't always work.

That's true but it's the second thing you do after resetting the wireless adapter. It has a like 50% chance of working
