was reading about using personalised unsecured wirless networks and some ppl said that it was illegal to use other ppl wireless networks. wat i'd like to know is how do they know that someone is using their network? so do they know and how cud they find out , or do they not know?

It is pretty easy to know if someone is using your wireless. You can go into the routers settings and see what ip's are assigned. YOu can even track what certain ip's are doing. The thing is if you know how to see who is on and what they are looking at you know enough to lock them out. Sometimes its fun to open mine up and mess with people. ;-)

haha yeah and its pretty easy to find out who it is... cuz the extent of wireless is fairly limited so odds are it is one of your neighbors or the kid out on the street with his laptop looking at porn. lol.. but yeah if you live in a complex/apartment it might be a lil harder to find out..

A lot of top brand wireless routers will have a logging feature always enabled, so if an attack etc happens they can trace back and find out. Plus, if you wanted to get technical, if you were to go onto a website from someone elses wireless router, the ISP they have, would have your wireless network cards mac address logged.

I'm not really sure, the FCC has yet to rule on it I believe. I think its legal as of right now. They expect the owner to secure their own wireless access point if he indeed wants it secured. Although if you used an exploit to get through the encryption method or in any other way then it would obviously be illegal. Don't quote me on this, you would find better results just googling it, its been in the news here latly, with the FCC rulings.

Well the only thing that they could do with a MAC is use it against you if you were ever caught...... Keyword: ever

Also anyone with a little knowhow keeps the MAC spoofed to some oddball MAC....

hrm no-how? MAC is at the first data layer - physical, its physically engraved into the card and packaged up beyond the software side of your computer. The only way I see around this, would be to filter all ur packets, which would be dumb, because they could still find the source the packets were coming from, and 2nd your connection would go to shit.

BTW: I was just demonstrating the most valuable information to a judge would be your mac, since its actually physical. But you should know that all your information is logged at an ISP using the vector support algorithm. Therefor to catch you would be quite easy, if you didnt use any kind of proxy etc. Which referring to his question, he was just asking the broad question what if.

Ok, how are they going to catch me if I dont use my wardriving card for my personal internet at all?

Edit: and are you saying that it is unlikely that i can spoof a MAC? Im just wondering.

ever heard pf industry tracking? These companies that make these wireless network cards keep track of the mac addresses they deliver, and its ran by a central company. They could probally track it down to you, if not 5 customers alike.

It's possible, but stupid. Doesnt really have relation to anything useful. Read what I wrote before.
