Im trying to help a friend with a networking problem. He has a desktop, running xp pro, that runs into a wireless router that runs into a cable modem. He wants to be able to access the files on his desktop from a laptop, running xp home. Both computers have internet access. We added the 2 computers to the same workgroup and both computers could then "see" eachother. The desktop has no problem accessing the laptop's files. But when the laptop tries to access the desktop's files, a login box pops up. Entering the password and username of the desktop's administrator account just causes the box to pop back up again asking for log in information. Im not really sure where to go from here. Im thinking it has to be something with the desktop's permision settings. But we messed around with those for a while and still were unable to log on.

On your Desktop XP Pro computer go into control panel\administrator tools\computer management-local user and groups-users. Check to see if Guest account is enable. You will need this account enable in order to access each other resources. This does not mean you can log in locally as Guest on the Desktop machine, it's just used to match account with XP home in order to share files and printer over the network.
