Right, i recently installled linux on my computer. The wireless internet card in it wont work with linux as there are no drivers. Is it possible for me to have a seperate router upstairs that will connect to the internet through the router downstairs, i would then plug a fast ethernet cable into the upstairs router and into my computer. Will this work?

Any help is welcome!

Yea but you won't be using it as a router though, the second router would just be an extra switch. So just plug that second router's LAN port to the first router's LAN port with a cross-over cable and turn off DHCP on the second router and you'll be good.

Forget the extra router! Buy a wireless bridge. I have 2 d-link wireless bridges. They work great. I use them to connect my ps2 and laptop to the wireless network.
