i hooked my pc directly to my wireless cable modem gateway with a CAT5 cable and it doesnt seem that i can connect to anything. i tried using the LAN connection and setting up a network, but during the process it says it has an error and could not continue. please help

get into your network connections. thats usually done by right clicking on "My network Places" and clicking properties. make sure that your broadband connection or Lan or whatever you are using to connect to the modem is enabled. unplug the cat5 cable. if you see the "network cable unplugged" icon in your taskbar, then plug it back in. check the status of the connection by going back into the network connections folder, and right clickiing on your connection. click status, and click support. Tell us what you see.

if the cable isnt responsive, you didn't correctly install either your chipset or your ethernet card.
