What is the path selection and the representation of distance with metrics?

Please cam someone answer me...I found lots of answers in the Net but I am not sure which one is the right answer.

path selection is how a router decides where to forward the packet. Each routing protocols has its own why of calculating which path it should take. There's two main types of routing protocols distance-vector (hop count metric) & link state-vector(alive/dead & bandwidth metric).
