I can connect to the internet fine, and I am not sure when exactly this started but, for some reason in my taskbar I do not have the icon that tells me that I am connected to the internet (the two computers with the globe) instead I think is something for the LAN. I'm not sure but it is two computers with an X.

Also, and I am pretty sure it is connected, when I click start and go to network a window comes up but it is blank.

Sounds like you might have two connections setup on you computer. One is your internet connection, which is working fine.
The other connection you might have used for anything (printer, network, etc.) but it's NOT connected.

The two computers with the X over them represent the connection which is not connected.

As for not seeing the two computers with the globe, I believe there is a setting you can chane in network properties so that you do see it. No reason really to show it though.

In short there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your pc.

could this possibly be the IPv6 connection?
for some reason i thought vista turned this on by default.

start -> run -> type cmd
type: ipconfig /all

if it says IPV6: enabled but disconnected - it could be that.
