So I build a NASbox out of some spare parts recently to be used primarily as a backup (recently had to deal with the dreaded 7200.11 firmware fiasco) secondly as straming (mostly audio, rarely use it for video cause i use netflix instead) and I realized the onboard is only 10/100. Now the drives are a pair of these:
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG EcoGreen F3 HD203WI 2TB 5400 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
Cause I got them on sale for 99$ and I was putting them in a RAID1.
I'm using FreeNAS on a thumb drive for the OS on this thing.
My router is a linksys 610n.
My question is this: Would it be worth the 30$ to get a good 10/100/1000 add in nic for the NASbox. I'm looking at this one: Newegg.com - Intel PWLA8391GT 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter 1 x RJ45 - Network Interface Cards
Am I going to notice a huge boost in performance with the new nic even with the drives being 5400rpm in RAID1?

Yes.
10/100Mbit is limited to approx 12.5MBytes/second (100/8)
10/100/1000Mbit is limited to approx 125MBytes/second (1000/8)

Even though they are 5400rpm I'd still think these could hit 70-80MB/s over a gigabit network.
On the wireless you'd be limited to the 300Mbit of N, but it's still faster than 10/100

Cntdwn is definitely right. Gig Nics are always good. I upgraded the nics on my freenas box lately and as the one I hastely put together only had 100's. Jesus I wish I had done it sooner. Getting about 98MB throughput. It rocks.
