I'm running two XP boxes behind a router to access the internet. What I can't seem to fugure out is if I can access one computer from the other via the router? Windows says it can be done with a hub, but can it be done with a linksys etherfast cable router?

You dont need any other device to do that like hub or switch.
This can be done with Linksys router as well.please provide some information like
1.Model no. of the router
2. are ur computers wired or wireless.

network info

I'm using a linksys router, model no. befsr41-ca ver.2. my devices are wired and are using the router as a gateway to the internet. Is it a router configuration I needto perform?

No, you shouldn't have to.

I would follow the link that SouthernLady gave you. The instructions under XP Peer to Peer should answer your questions.

I have a Linksys box similar to the one that you have, and all that they are is a router with a built-in networking switch.

1. Turn off the machines.
2. Unplug your modem
3. Reset your router ( with a paper clip )
4. Reboot machines.

This may take a couple of times to complete.
(xp does this sometimes)
I personally had to reset everything about 6 times to link my 4
XP pro machines together...
Make sure when you installed your Os's you didn't set mulitple "domains"

Workgroup will work fine.
