I recently moved and got new internet. Previously I would get a modem, then attach my router, done-and-done. The new modem came as an all-in-one with a router. I'm not sure why but my WinXP HTPC doesn't like connecting to it, and my roomie can't find it's wireless on his phone.

What I would like to do is take my old router (D-Link DIR-655) and have it connected to the modem/router combo (Arris TG1672) as a ... repeater? I want to be able to cable the HTPC to the D-link and have my roomie use it's wifi.

I read a wiki on Dynamic (DHCP) Method, but I'm not sure if having the modem hardwired to one of the routers changes anything.

See if your modem/router combo has an option to put it into bridge mode and disable it's wifi... That should let it operate as just a modem that leases a single IP to your stand-alone router, all DHCP/routing/addressing would then be handled my your router instead of the modems built in router. This will also prevent a double-nat issue from arising.
