What is CVS?

I was wondering what CVS was cos i have NFI and i cant get an answer anywhere else. And some random FAQ in some random site was shithouse.

concurrent version system, its a system for downloading software updates and making sure you get an up to date version of something basically

CVS allows multiple users to work on the same file at the same time. They check the project out of the repository and commit it when they are done. If two people are editing the same file at the same time, when they come to commit it the changes are merged with the changes made by the other person. - otherwise the last person to commit would overwrite everyone elses changes.

It is commonly used in software projects
