The information may not be concentrated in one document, but if you google for a specific problem there is 90% chance of finding the answer. If you can't find the answer to your problem post it in a linux forum and most of the times you have a first answer in less than 24h.

For ubuntu users this is a very helpful guide. It explains how to configure the basics of Ubuntu.

so do you need 2 hard drives to dual boot?

not at all. you can adjust the size of your hard drive in the Ubuntu installer to free space for the linux partition without even loosing data.

you just have to be sure you have enough free space on the hard drive of an install.
