What is a good framerate?

In short, frame rate doesn't matter much.

There are several other factors that can make lower framerates seem better than higher onces, and vice versa. The "nicer" the graphics, the lower the frame rate you can get away with down to a certian point.

A good target is 30-40 with nice, smooth graphics (motion blurs if they ar there, anti-aliasing, etc...). This will give you good quality visuals with room for a few problems here and there. You only need to get really high (near 60) with fairly poor per-frame quality.

A typical monitor refresh rate at 1600x1200 is 60Hz. Frame rates higher than your refresh rate are pointless.
